Frequently asked questions
What is an LEI number?
An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code used to identify legal entities globally in financial transactions. Designed to increase transparency and reduce fraud, LEI numbers are a mandatory requirement by financial regulators worldwide.
Who needs an LEI number?
Legal entities involved in regulated financial markets must have an LEI number. This requirement stems from financial regulations such as UK MiFID II and UK EMIR, which demand clear identification for all parties trading in shares, bonds or derivatives.
Who issues LEI numbers?
LEI numbers are issued by Local Operating Units (LOUs) accredited by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF). The role of an LOU is to:
- collect and verify data submitted by companies
- issue and manage LEI numbers in accordance with established rules and standards
Registration Agents work alongside LOUs to assist companies with applying for, renewing and transferring LEI numbers. While Registration Agents do not issue LEI numbers themselves, they facilitate the process through accredited issuers. LEI Universal is an official Registration Agent for Ubisecure Oy (LEI: 529900T8BM49AURSDO55).
How quickly will I receive my LEI number?
Your LEI number is typically issued within 24 hours, provided the submitted data is accurate and no additional documentation is required. In cases where further verification is needed (Level 2 data), the issuance process may take longer.
What is LEI Priority processing?
With Priority processing, your application is handled as a top priority and your LEI number is typically issued within 3 hours. If errors occur in the submitted data or additional documents are required (such as consolidation group data), issuance may take longer. You can select this service at checkout before completing your payment.
How much does an LEI number cost?
Our pricing depends on the length of the registration period, with longer terms offering better value. You can view our full pricing on the pricing page. All prices include mandatory GLEIF fees.
How long is an LEI number valid?
An LEI number is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance and must be renewed annually to remain active. We also offer multi-year plans to ensure your LEI stays valid automatically, giving you total peace of mind.
How can I check my LEI status?
You can verify the existence and status of an LEI number using the search tool on our application form, or via the official GLEIF website at search.gleif.org.
When are additional documents required?
When applying for or transferring an LEI number, additional documentation may be required in the following cases:
- The applicant has no statutory signing authority — if the application is submitted by someone without statutory representation rights, a Letter of Authority (LOA) signed by a company director or authorised board member is required.
- Transferring an LEI from another provider — for transfers, a Letter of Authority is required if the person submitting the request does not have registered signing authority.
- Parent-subsidiary relationships — if an entity is more than 50% owned by a parent company, the parent's consolidated annual accounts may be required to verify the structure. These can be uploaded directly via the application form.
- Further data verification — if the information on Companies House is not sufficient to process the application, we may request additional documents to confirm the company's details or right of representation.
If additional documents are needed, we will contact you directly.
